Title & Purpose

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble:

for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand, Joel 2:1.

Barnardos Ireland rebuked for teaming up with Gerry Adams on ‘lost childhood campaign’

Barnardos Ireland are facing criticism, and rightly so, after teaming up with Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams to promote its “Lost Childhood Campaign”.

Critics are accusing the charity of gross insensitivity due to the number of children murdered and traumatised by the party’s military wing, the IRA.

Belfast Newsletter: Barnardos lashed for teaming up with Adams on ‘lost childhood campaign’

Thomas Barnardo, who founded the organisation which bears his name, must be turning in his grave when you consider how this organisation presently conducts itself. They stand for many things which Thomas Barnardo would be against.
Thomas Barnardo was born in July 1845, the ninth child of his parents. His father was of Jewish descent. He was subsequently converted to Christ in meetings held in Dublin in the aftermath of the 1859 Revival in Ulster. Through the witness of his elder brothers, who had already come to Christ, Thomas also became an evangelical Christian.

He later went to London to study to be a medical missionary. It was here that the Lord challenged him about the plight of destitute children in the East End of London.

In 1867 he first opened a school in the East End to care for and educate the children of the area left orphaned and destitute by a recent cholera outbreak. The first Barnardo home was established three years later in 1870. Its address was 18 Stepney Causeway. Later a girls' home was opened.

Thomas Barnardo believed in the biblical concept of the family. Instead of structuring the Barnardo Homes with children of the same age, Barnardo patterned them instead upon the family. He had a matron and then children of various ages as you would have in any family wit children. He did so after much prayer about the matter and the Lord challenging him through the words of Psalm 68:6: God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land
